CHAPTER 2
Davis Moore always had a peculiar fashion sense. She loved a blue bow tie on a tight fitted white collar gown, and always looked sharp with her long dark hair packed up in a hair ruffle behind her back.
"Oh Davie you look dashy!" Mama Freda praised her.
She blushed. "thank you." She walked swiftly outside the house to the garage.
"Davie!" Mama Freda called from the dinning room.
"Mother?" She walked back into the house.
"I was thinking you will take some toasted bread along."
"That? No. There are no more dried fishes in the kitchen. How will I do that?" She pointed to the toasted bread in the fries basket.
"Oh! I will get some on my way home." She felt sorry.
"It's okay Mother." She turned back and turned around almost immediately.
"Have a beautiful day at work."
"You too Davie," She moved to the door "lots of love."
Davie was already in her car. And as she drove to work, she thought about her mother, about how she coped without Pa Moore. It must have been tough for her but she was glad she seemed strong.
And she knew she was her only favorite thing left and of course she wouldn't want to see her hurt or harmed. When she had just received her appointment letter, her mother thought it was a good idea to fetch her a guard but no! She insisted. She was now a woman and no longer a child yes she could choose and had the right to accept or reject anything she was offered.
Melanie was also caring as she always stopped by almost every weekend. She seemed to have taken visiting her regularly as a duty. Melanie knew that Davis Moore would feel lonely and sad. Pa Moore's kind affection had endeared him to her and it would be difficult for her heart to forget him in a hurry for all the love he'd showered on her.
She had drove for almost forty minutes and there she stood before the huge black gate. She usually arrived very early to work as she wouldn't want to be a bad example to her inferiors, or would want to anger her boss. She never forgot that a boss had a boss.
She drove in through the gate straightway to the garage. Oh! She muttered. Her boss was already in the office because she'd seen his red saloon car in the garage. She looked away immediately and squeezed her face... he's got about three cars I wonder why he'd chose this piece of shit today. Her problem was that color.
She stepped out and bent forward as she stretched out her hand to take her hand bag and files from the back seat of the car. She walked into the building, and that usual chilly atmosphere caused her to wrap her arms around her body. She wasn't fond of spending long hours in the air conditioned offices so she always kept a thick jacket in her office in case she began to freeze, she'd run into it and stay alive for Mama Freda.
Her office was directly opposite Mr. Allan's, her boss. Most offices in the building were demarcated with glassy partitions so it was easier for her to have a clear view of what was going on in there.
Mr. Allan got up furiously and threw Anita's files at her.
"For your information.. you're sacked!" He said and pointed to the exit "leave now! You wouldn't love the security throwing you out."
He sat back resting an arm on his table to support his jaw with it,he was waiting for her to gather up her properties.
"Thank you Sir." She managed to say amidst tears and bowed in curtsey. Deep down in her she wished he would forgive and give her a suspension instead.
Ah! Davis Moore pondered and immediately ran out after Anita.
"Hey! Hey Wait." She waved with her hand.
When Anita saw her,she turned and looked elsewhere, she knew Davis Moore was more interested to know why Mr. Allan had been so angry at her since he was known to be very gentle.
"Please don't ask me why..." She couldn't complete her statement her voice was frail. She turned to look back at the building she was about to leave forever and began to sob. Davis waited patiently till she seemed to have stopped then she said.
"I want to know." Davis Moore had her hands crossed behind her back and it's rested on her butts ,her right leg pounded the ground as if she was hearing a music or as someone who was ready for a fight but was waiting for her opponent to throw the first fist.
"I can't say Ma. I can't say now. If you don't mind, I'll appreciate your stopping by my house after work."
"Alright." She already disappeared into the building before Anita noticed since she had been looking down all the while.✍️
